General Waste Tips

  • Use the Australasian Recycling Label to check recyclability.
  • Download waste apps like Port Stephens Council Waste App or RecycleMate.
  • Wash bins regularly & store them in a shaded area to prevent odours.
  • Flatten cardboard before recycling.
  • Scrunch aluminium foil into a ball (tennis ball size or larger) before placing it in recycling.

Reducing Landfill Waste

  • Sell, donate, or repurpose good-condition items through:
    • Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, Garage Sale Trail, or local charities.
  • Use alternative recycling programs:
    • H&M & Zara – Clothing recycling bins
    • TreadLightly – Jogger & runner shoe recycling
    • UPPAREL – Home textile recycling collection service

Food Waste Reduction

  • NSW EPA Love Food Hate Waste
  • Plan meals & check the fridge before shopping.
  • Use ShareWaste to connect with composting neighbours.
  • Freeze food scraps like prawn shells until bin day to reduce smells.
