Koala Cam Updates

Our koala friends are safer than ever with their new underpass!

We completed the Port Stephens Drive Koala Vehicle Strike Project in October 2023, delivered in partnership with the NSW Koala Program aiming to reduce koala fatalities along one of the worst koala road-strike locations in NSW.

The project has been very successful at saving several species, including the Koala. The project's dedicated Koala underpass enables koalas (and other native species) to cross the busy Port Stephens Drive safely and is monitored by the Council’s 'Koala Cam'.

Species: Land Mullet (Bellatorias major)

The species favours habitat with many fallen logs, and it remains in close proximity to these. The restricted sunlight of the forest type require a number of basking sites to be available. It is less frequently found in other types of environs, such as the open eucalypt woodland of the region.

The lizards shelter in hollow logs or burrows. Often these are dug into the soil-bound root systems of fallen trees.
