Community Action for Safe Speeds

11 October 2024

The Community Action for Safe Speeds (CASS) study, led by researchers from The University of NSW and supported by Port Stephens Council, offers the opportunity to contribute your ideas to help create safer journeys on our roads.

Would you like to join a community discussion on how to encourage safe speeds in Port Stephens? By joining a community jury, you’ll be part of a group decision-making process that brings together a diverse mix of local citizens.

The group will listen to expert content on speeding and road safety, deliberate on what they have learned and provide suggestions from a community perspective. Together with your peers, you’ll help create a set of community-driven recommendations for local education and awareness initiatives to be trialed in your area – all aimed at reducing speeding and keeping road users safe.

What is involved?

  • Four community jury meetings across a four-week period with other community members (14 hours total)
  • Hear from experts about a variety of aspects relating to driving speeds, speed management, initiatives to reduce speeding
  • Propose your own solutions on how to encourage safer driving speeds on the roads in your community

Am I eligible?

To participate you must:

  • Be aged 18 years and older
  • Willing to travel to Community Jury locations and commit the time required for participation
  • Be comfortable speaking English
  • Live, work or frequently drive around the Port Stephens Local Government Area

Individuals who have worked in a road safety profession are not eligible to participate. Socio-demographic targets will be set, and once these targets are met, additional participants from those groups will be placed on a participation waitlist in case of drop-out.

Will I be reimbursed?

Yes. You will receive $40/hour, which will cover your time and any expenses you may have during your participation.
