New exercise program for over 50s launching in Raymond Terrace
A new exercise program for people over 50, Strength for Life, has launched in Raymond Terrace.
The program is specifically designed to improve the strength, balance, coordination and endurance of older people. It has been developed by COTA (Council on the Ageing) NSW in partnership with Port Stephens Council and Toogee Martial Arts.
All Strength for Life instructors undertake specialised training with COTA NSW so they can tailor their approach for people over 50 and understand the different types of injuries and conditions that older people face.
COTA NSW CEO Meagan Lawson says that keeping yourself moving and getting stronger has a flow-on effect for your general quality of life.
“Improving your fitness makes day to day tasks like carrying your shopping and playing with your grandchildren easier, as well as reducing the risk of falls and other injuries.
“The beauty of the Strength for Life program is that it is specially designed for older people, and the instructors are sensitive to their specific needs,” she said.
Local fitness trainer and Strength for Life instructor Steve Wheatland understands why some people may feel nervous, but says he always tries to make people feel comfortable.
“We have a chat and a laugh, and we are very down to earth. We even have pictures of normal people on the walls, rather than super-fit ones, and everyone loves that.
“I’ve noticed many older people stop moving when they retire — but it’s really important for your overall health to keep active, and these classes are ideal for that,” he said.
Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says focusing on staying active and healthy is key to on-going independence.
“The Strength for Life program is a great way to kick-start a new exercise regime, helping to get people moving and trying new things,” he said.
Participants undertake an initial assessment to develop a program that is tailored to their needs, at a cost of $40 ($30 concession), with classes costing $10 ($8 concession) thereafter.
Classes start this week at Toogee Martial Arts, 78D Port Stephens Street, Raymond Terrace — contact Steven on 0418 170 008 to book your initial assessment.
