Homelessness in Port Stephens

Many people in our community face the hardship of not having a safe place to call home. Those that are experiencing or at risk of homelessness are our most vulnerable community members. Homelessness can expose people to violence, cause long-term unemployment and lead to the development of chronic ill health. It impacts the wellbeing of everyone in our community

We recognise it is a complex issue with no single solution. We know that success can be achieved through collaboration at all levels of government and the community sector.

Council is working together with the community sector and government through our Homelessness Stakeholder Advisory group to deliver a range of initiatives that seek to alleviate homelessness issues.

National Homelessness Week

National Homelessness Week (7-13 August) raises awareness of homelessness in Australia

Access to safe and secure housing is a basic human right but unfortunately, there are over 122,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in Australia. Only 9% of these people are rough sleeping, majority are living in temporary dwellings such as refuges, crisis accommodations or motels1.
