Learn more about our gravel road maintenance program

Did you know that the Port Stephens road network includes 57 km of gravel roads, one of which is Swan Bay Road in Swan Bay?

Mayor Leah Anderson and Deputy Mayor Jason Wells chatted to Council's Asset Section Manager, John Maretich, about our gravel road maintenance program and the works being undertaken at Swan Bay Road.

Gravel roads are cheaper to maintain, have significantly lower traffic volumes than our sealed roads, and generally service rural or semi-rural locations. The sealing of a gravel road is considered an upgrade and is generally driven by housing development.

For our existing gravel road maintenance, we undertake 3 levels of gravel road maintenance:

  • Level 1: Complete gravel re-sheet
  • Level 2: Proactive maintenance grading
  • Level 3: Reactive response maintenance

The works on the gravel Swan Bay Road, between Davis Road and Waterfront Road, fall under Level 1, and a complete gravel re-sheet has been undertaken.
